Today we had Lucy’s 6th birthday party. A few months back I brought Lucy in to get her hair cut at my salon and she started talking with Janine (the owner) and Irene (my stylist) about her birthday party. They offered up the salon for a Pretty Party where the kids would get their hair styled and makeup and nails done and they would get to dress up in high heels and fancy clothes and have a real fashion show.
Now when I was Lucy’s age the thought of this would have mortified me. I was the type of kid who refused to wear dresses and went to great lengths to avoid it. When my mom would send me out of the house in skirts I would wear jeans underneath, rolled up to hide them, then as soon as I left the house I would roll them down and take the skirt off. It wasn’t till I was older that I discovered my girlie side and now shopping for clothes is one of my favorite pasttimes.
Lucy, on the other hand, would die of ecstacy at the very thought of such a party. She is so into clothes and make up already, always extremely concerned with how stylish her outfit is and always has to make sure everything matches perfectly. She might be more into fashion and makeup than any 6 year old I have ever seen. Just the other day she came up to me in a little tank top she had chosen and said, “Mom, you know why I love this top? Because it makes my boobs look great!”
I am in such trouble with this one.
So we head over to the salon on 1 pm and Irene and Janine have outdone themselves. This is a little girl’s dream. All the kids got their hair done (Lucy had hers done 3 times!) and then on to makeup which involved a lot of glitter as makeup for 6 yr olds must. Then they got their nails done (I even did my toes). But the best thing was the rack of clothes Janine brought in. She had prom dresses and go go boots and high heels and beaded dresses and everything you could imagine a little girl would want to try on.
All the little girls were beside themselves and when they were all done they looked so adorable. Each one of them got to have a polaroid taken of them which they got to decorate with stickers and markers. We gave each of them a little stand to display their fashion photograph. Then all the adults then got ready to watch the fashion show as the girls lined up at the other end of the salon. You should have seen all the little girls strutting their stuff down the runway. That was a priceless memory. They all really worked it.
Even Maud got into the whole thing dressing up in these crazy balck and white striped tights, a yellow and black striped halter top, a purple feather boa and a sequined silver cap. She participated in the fashion show, did a fashion photograph and everything. For a couple of hours there I forgot how much she has been behaving like a teenager lately.
Leo was a little bored but he took it well. I asked him if he wanted to to have his nails done. He, of course, was mortified at the thought but then I reminded him that he went through a period when he was 2 where whenever I did my nails he wanted his done too. He denied this to ever have been true, of course. But I know he had pruple nails for about 6 months.
Nelly found a kind of Prairie Pioneer dress and looked adorable. Lucy got in a strapless black lace number which she looked incredibly cute in. She belted it with this cute little maroon belt that had a rose on it. I will keep that photgraph forever.
After the show we all sang Happy Brithday and then everyone settled down to eat the cake. Hailey asked her Dad why he hadn’t thrown her a birthday party at a salon. And then I overheard the girls saying that this party was even better than Simona’s. Now I didn’t go to Simona’s party but I imagine it must have been pretty good to set the bar for the year. I mean to have set the new bar higher than Simona’s party, well what other goal could you have? But I am so happy everyone had such a good time. That was the real goal afterall.
After we wrapped it up, we gave everyone their gift bags which were little play purses filled with flavored lip gloss, sparkly lotion, little gold sunglasses, toy bracelets and necklaces and some candy lipstick.
I asked Lucy afterwards how she would rate her birthday on a scale of 1 to 10 and she said infnity. Nelly chimed in an 18. Leo said a 2 since he did completely hate it. I consider even that a success.
