Mothers Day Breakfast is Improving but then I lost everyone toGuitar Hero

My kids were so excited about Mothers Day yesterday.  All week I heard them whispering among themselves, clearing divining nefarious plans for the day. So everyone let me sleep in, which was a big treat.  When I woke up, Leo brought me a menu he had written out so I could order my breakfast in bed. In past years, breakfast has been tough on Mothers Day.  I choked down some pretty interesting dishes presented me by my children, always with a smile wile raving about how good it all was.  This year I had a choice between happy face pancakes, French Toast, and egg in a hole with bacon.  I chose the egg in a hole knowing that I had taught Leo and Maud this year how to make that.  Off they went, with just a little complaining that my choice wasn’t the happy face pancakes since they were eating whatever I ordered. Joe supervised the cooking and made the bacon himself and momentarily I was presented my breakfast in bed. It was much better than in years past and with just a little more butter and some salt and pepper I would have declared it delicious.  Without the salt and butter I declare it a vast improvement :-)   And the kids were so excited and there was such a helping of love in the whole dish, well it was wonderful.

After I got out of bed we all got dressed and went on a hike in Runyon Canyon because Leo was upset that he couldn’t find any lizards in our yard. He was so upset about it that I told him we could go to Runyon to look there.  He said no because it was Mothers Day so I shouldn’t have to do anything for him.  But I explained that part of Mothers Day is seeing your kids happy and so I wanted to go to Runyon because that is what mothers do.

Everyone really enjoyed it except Maud who had turned solidly into a teenager and moaned about hiking almost the whole time, depite my reminding her that it was Mothers Day and she should at least pretend to be happy. Apparently the Mothers Day power is no match for the teenage angst power.I am not sure that spidey powers could even conquer that one.

When we got back we all settled in and watched the Brady Bunch Movie then I suprised the kids with happy face pancakes for dinner.  I knew they were all really disappointed when I didn’t choose that for breakfast in bed.  And they were all pretty excited about that.  Maud and Leo put all the faces on the pancakes with whip cream and raspberries and the dinner was declared a great success.

After dinner Joe broke out the new Guitar Hero he bought.  Leo had been talking about it the whole weekend and I’ll tell you what…he was pretty darn good.  He and Joe took turns on the training sessions while the rest of us watched and it was so fun.  We were all rooting them on and coaching them on it.  Everyone was really into it.

After the kids went to bed Joe took me out to a nice diiner and gave me three soup cookbooks which he knew I really wanted.  The real coop was the David Hasselhoff autobiography though.  On the flap it says it is “Hofftastic!” so I can’t wait.  I told Joe I was going to read it to him in bed :-)

When we got back from dinner Joe started playing Guitar Hero again at which point I realized he is a total dork.  Somehow the playing with a 9 year old masked it but once he was alone the site of this almost 40 year old with this little toy, plastic guitar rocking out to a cartoon vido game, well, seriously, can you imagine anything dorkier.  I mean he is my dork and I love him but I was cracking up.

All in all it was a wonderful Mothers Day.  I couldn’t have asked for better.
