I can’t resist a political rant

So anyone who knows me knows I am as strong as they come on the issue of preserving civil liberties. The erosion of civil liberties under the current administration with the Patriot Act which did so much to roll back due process and, of course, UIGEA which attempts ot legislate what adults can do with their own money in their own homed.  So here is what really pisses me off: Sarah Palin actually mocked Obama because he believes in upholding The Constitution last night in her speech to the Rebuplican National Convention.  She said something to the effect of with terrorists planning atrocious acts of violence against American citizens Obama is worried about reading them their rights.

Ok.  So I nearly threw my computer against the wall when I heard that.  WTF? Did she actually mock Obama for his commitment to due process? Because here is the thing: Yes we should be reading them their rights because when we give the goverment the right to stop reading them their rights we give the goverment the right to stop reading you your rights.  You can’t look at a person and know just from looking whether they deserve due process or not.  As it is right now, under the Patriot Act, you can be arrested and held without being charged, without the right to representation, without the right to a speedy trial indefinitely if you are declared to be an enemy of the state.  Every single citizen of this country could declared as such without proof, without being presumed innocent until proven guilty, just thrown in Guantanamo Bay and never heard from again. 

So apparently Sarah Palin thinks we should mock a candidate for his commitment to civil liberties, due process, Constitutional rights.  Wow.  That is so terrifying. This is, of course, in addition to the consistent mocking of Obama for being a community organizer as if that means he is unqualified.  The man finishes Harvard and uses his fancy Harvard degree not to go get a high paying, fancy job.  Instead, straight out of college, he gets a job in community service for three years as a community organizer.  That sounds like a man committed to service to his country to me.
