Social media and political empowerment (and a slight moan about my schedule)

The long hours of the WSOP can really get you down. Bikram Southwest changed its class schedule which happens to make it really hard for me to get over there with the WSOP schedule. Last year they had classes starting every hour. This year they have a 10 am which is too early for someone up past 3 am playing the 5pm tournaments and an 11:30 am class which ends too late for the 2 pm restarts of the second day of the tournament. That sucks for me because I feel like a blob with no energy.  I haven’t worked out in a week! That extra half hour really screwed me. 11 am was the perfect time last year because the class got done in time for me to shower and be a human again before the 2pm restart.  Whatever. I feel yucky.

So I have to find ways to pass the time when I feel like my brain is fried from playing poker and having to think that hard over the the long hours. Not only that, but I feel a lot of the time like I lose track of the world. I just found out David Letterman made some Sarah Palin comment that has the world in a snit. Who knew? And it happened a week ago. So a lot of my downtime is spent randomly watching videos on YouTube or TED so I can at least try to get informed in whatever small way I can. At least that way I don’t feel like all of my news is coming from Twitter. Good thing, though, it turns out Twitter is not such a bad source as this thoughtful talk from Clay Shirkey for TED on the effect of social media on the political empowerment of the people shows. Very timely in light of what is happening in Iran (amazingly enough, I am aware of the Iran election situation despite living in the black whole of The Rio). BTW…I found this video because someone on tweeted it to me. Poetic, no?

… and enjoy the notion that I multi-tasked creating this video, while multi-tasking, including keeping up with the news and playing a little poker on Ultimate Bet ( Love The New Football Skin) (I don’t think I can see the cards on that other new skin)

    Nuff Said?

  2. Very interesting. I shall have to share on my facebook.

I didn’t get the cow video, but whatever…

Annie, don’t those people at the Bikram place KNOW WHO YOU ARE? (lol)…I’m sure one conversation with someone behind the desk and you could get your 11AM class back!

    WTF?

    Thanks for linking this video.

“Global responsibility” (not mentioned in this video, yes) is a stupid utopia. But I love how internet sensationally fast has helped and is helping to build real democrazy here in the western world too. (I’m from Finland btw)

As many people I also worry about professional journalism but I think that the arousal of new media is just a challenge for journalists to do better work.
