Right after I posted my rant about the High Fructose Corn Syrup commercials, someone shared this wonderful video with me. In it, Dr. Robert Lustig walks you through a thorough explanation of why fructose is so bad for you. I will warn you, this video is 1hr 30 mins long. But it is well worth the time to watch it the whole way through. I have never seen such an eloquent explanation of the difference between glucose and fructose. This video really shows you how ridiculous and evil those HFCS commercials really are. Lustig demonstrates that it is clearly fructose, not fat, that is responsible for the obesity and diabetes epidemics in our country. Even baby formula has fructose in it! And we are seeing overweight 6 month olds now. No wonder!
Anyway, please watch this. It is eye opening.
Why do you have a poker blog that you use to post nothing but non-related poker material?
Annie,
Thank you! This was very informative and will help me be more aware of what goes in my body. More importantly what goes in my children’s body.
Thank you again.
I like the different topics, including food, being a mom, and the poker woven in. But, are you really playing poker these days or just riding the poker wave while you focus on other stuff?
Thank You for posting this! I am a health nut as it is but I didn’t even know this. I don’t drink soda for obvious reasons but hopefully now I can show this to others who always brush me off when I tell them to eat healthy. Thank You!
I think you are completely wrong on these commercials and the Dr. Lustig would agree you are wrong. It is sugar in general that is the problem not HFCS. These commercials don’t say that HFCS is good for you the just say it is the same as regular sugar. Below are pieces from and article Dr. Lustig is quoted in regarding the change from HFCS in chocolate milk to regular white sugar.
Switching from high-fructose corn syrup to sucrose in the chocolate milk is nonsense, said Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at UCSF. It’s not how the sugar is made that’s the problem, he said – it’s that Americans, and especially kids, are eating too much sugar, period.
“The difference between high-fructose corn syrup and sucrose, molecule for molecule or ounce for ounce, isn’t worth discussing. They are both equally dangerous,” Lustig said.
“People pick on high-fructose corn syrup because it’s new, it’s ‘not natural,’ ” Lustig said. “What makes high-fructose corn syrup sinister is its price. Because it’s cheap, it’s made its way into every item we purchase at the store. The food companies know that when they add it, we buy more.”

The problem seems to be that it’s easy to eat too much hfcs because it’s in almost every processed food you can eat at the grocery store. We need to be aware of how much of each type sugar we eat. -D
I am suspect of any person of even moderate intelligence who decides to defend HFCS (ed). Corporate influence on the food we consume is out of control it serves not to better our communities and enrich our lives….BUT only to create a profit….and ED, that is a big negative any way you slice it. so what ever the factory processed shit we are talking about, it is certianly linked to the suffering of many people through its contribution to western chronic illness. So yeah…I get a little peeved watching this slick messaging that is simply propaganda on TV. Good luck with the Poker Annie!

Good stuff.
Don’t forget about the mercury in HFCS sodas.
I added your post to my blog!
Thank you very much and I’m going to follow you very close if I can. Some good info here hope we can get started on getting HFCS out of our food supply. jrj
